Day 34, June 27th: Hanoi

The last Thursday of the trip. I was already well out of ideas for the agenda as I was yesterday as well. For today I had one thing in my mind and that was to try and find a local tattoo shop where I could get some new ink on my skin. We had already visited one parlor but the problem with that place was the lack of common language. In any other case I would be just fine with needing to communicate without being able to understand the speech but when it's about getting a picture on your skin that's gonna be there forever I want to be able to communicate with the opposite side. At the moment I'm not that experimental that I'd just go and let someone do something without even knowing what they usually do.

So, we started the day with yet another Movie that Enni wanted to watch. After the movie we went out to try the restaurant right accross the street from our front door. Funny thing that we haven't been there before as it's so close and conviniently placed... Anyways, the food (scallops) was ok and the price was moderate, maybe just a little bit higher than normally.

The lunch scallops. Had someone said a year ago that I'd order scallops for lucnh I would had laughed and walked away but that's something this trip has taught me: to eat scallops.

After the food we jumped into a taxi and gave the driver the address for the Hanoi tattoo club. The address was a bit cryptic for me and I suppose it was to the driver as well. There was a mentioning about the parlor being on the economics university campus area on alley 2aaa, house A15 and room 101. The problem was that even though we asked bunch of people about the place none had even heard of the building. The weather was again kicking in, reaching on skin feel about +38 degrees level. That was the biggest reason for giving in on the search for this specific parlor as Enni was getting all hot and tired again. So, off we went back to the apartment to cool down for a while. After the cooling down we decided to go to yet another museum, and believe it or not it was from Enni's suggestion! ;) She wanted to go to the War/Airforce museum. Yes, the same one we tried to get into already twice before.

The museum is located next to the Lenin park close to the Mausoleum. We entered to the area and started from the yard full of old aeroplanes, helicopters, tanks, cannons and bomb shells. We climbed to the flag tower to see the full view of the area although it's pretty hard to do as the yard goes around the museum building and stretches to the backyard's side as well. Well anyways, we saw tons of cool tools of warfare and loads of war propaganda related material inside the museum building.

 Some cannons

A view to the yard of the museum

Enni taking the watch at the flag tower

Some even bigger guns

The BIG gun

A pile of debris from shot down aeroplanes

Is it the superman...? No... Is it a plane...? No. Then what the heck is it? It's some sort of magnetic pulse bomb and mine destroyer. That's what the sign said.

A darn big HeCo (not sure if it works the same way in English army terms as in the Finnish ones), The CH-47 Chinook.

So far a UFO. Could someone identify this one...? Maybe a Cessna A-37 Dragonfly...?

After the museum visit I decided to give Hanoi yet another chance on the tattoo case. There was supposed to be one more parlor in the backyard of the museum. So we went to find it but after carryinf Enni for 15 minutes not finding it I decided that I'd give the next opportunity for some artist back in Finland, so watch out all you with the practice in Finland, I'm coming after you! ;)

Back at our apartment building we went to try the cakes of Highland coffee as I promised to Enni as she had done good job walking most of the day by herself. After a small sugar high achieved by the force of a carrot cake and a chocolate brownie we went back to the apartment and took a short swim at the pool.

In the evening we went to eat in one restaurant Laura had gotten an address to. The place turned out to be THE place for the locals to come in and have a pint or 10 with their mates. The noise was ear cracking and the place smelled a bit like butt crack. No, really it did. I'm not sure whether it's some chemical they use in some of the places or what but in quite many palces I've had this sudden feel of things smelling like butt crack. Weird. But as we had gotten some recommendations to try it we did. I was feeling experimental (not sure if it was due to the butt crack smelling chemical or not) again and ordered crocodile from the menu. It turned out to be rather delicious after realising which parts were supposed to be eaten and which not. I also enjoyed few Bia Hois to wash down the cocodrillos. On the way back we took some take away coffee from Passio cafe.

Something on the left that's not right... I mean a nice set of vegetables and a WTF! That's Laura's dish.

The dish of cocodrillo! Splendid! :)

So, tomorrow it's Friday and nearly the end of our trip. Lets see what we still can fit into our trip! ;)
