Day 33, June 26th: Hanoi

It was already Wednesday of the last week spent in Hanoi. I was already running out of ideas what to do for the day. Enni wanted to watch the Aladdin movie from Disney channel in the morning which was quite ok, as I still couldn't figure out the agenda for the day. After the movie had passed we went out to have a "morning" swim as it was going to be a rather hot day once again. After the swim I made some food at the apartment just to get rid of the stuff in the closets. I was trying to think again what we haven't yet done when the old idea jumped back in: the prison museum. I remember people calling it "the Hilton Hanoi" so we jumped to taxi and took a ride to the Hilton Hanoi. It was obvious that the Hilton Hanoi was just a fun nickname for the prison. After finding out that we needed to find something else we went to a cafe next to the hotel Hilton and I made a small research on the subject just to find out that our apartment was actually right next to the damn prison museum! :) The Hanoi towers close to our apartment was just hiding the museum almost fully. The locals know the museum by the name Hoa Lo. So that was our next destination.

Gone swimming. Enni's sandals I must point out. ;)
The museum with all it's cruelty was maybe not that suitable for Enni but I tried to explain the horrors of the place in a way that she would understand it as well. The quilliotine and the use of it was however a tough one to explain. Well, now Enni knows that it was used to decapitate the extremely bad people. She had some good questions regarding it during the whole day though. ;)

 Entering the Hoa Lo

The walls of "Hanoi Hilton" paved with glass and other sharp objects

Rocks used in building the prison

The formal suit in the prison

The scary puppets in the prison's political prisoner department

The isolation chamber

There were also some escapes from the prison...

...through these sewers

A prison finding his way out of the museum through the sewer

The women and children in the prison

The monument dedicated to the prisoners of Hoa Lo

This is how close the Hanoi towers were to the prison. Actually I think that the towers had been built on vast part of the prison and thus only a small portion of the prison remained

US soldiers jump suit

Debris of a shot qown B52 bomber

A flag of the prisoners

On the way back home from the exhibition we went to another cafe to have some cool refreshments as the hot weather was really kicking in. After cooling down a bit we headed back to the apartment to wait for a while for Laura to get back from work. In the evening we went to another suggested restaurant, Koto. It was quite near and the food was excelent with the acceptable price level.

After arriving to the apartment we had a quick Skype call with my parents to check that everything was ok in that end and that things are set for us to arrive back home. After the Skype call Enni went to bed and I sneaked out for the gym.

In this point of the trip Laura started feeling a bit weak, like flu taking over. I had the same symptoms this morning so lets just hope that we all stay healthy till the end of the trip so that the journey back won't be any longer than necessary.
